While both sunflower seeds and soybeans can be processed using solvent extraction, the two oilseeds require significantly different approaches due to their distinct physical and chemical characteristics.
Oil Content Determines the Process
The most fundamental difference lies in oil content. Sunflower seeds contain approximately 40-50% oil, while soybeans have only about 18-20%. This difference directly dictates the extraction strategy.
For high-oil materials like sunflower seeds, the industry standard is pre-pressing followed by solvent extraction. The seeds are first mechanically pressed to remove the bulk of the oil, then the remaining cake undergoes solvent extraction to recover residual oil. This two-stage approach prevents the extractor from being overloaded with oil and improves overall efficiency.
For low-oil materials like soybeans, direct solvent extraction is the preferred method. The soybeans are prepared through cleaning, crushing, conditioning, and flaking, then sent directly to the extractor without a pre-pressing step.
Pretreatment Differences
- Sunflower seeds require dehulling before processing. The hulls are abrasive and absorb oil, so removing them improves oil yield and reduces equipment wear. Huatai offers specialized centrifugal dehullers for this purpose.
- Soybeans, by contrast, undergo a simpler preparation. After cleaning, they are cracked, conditioned, and flaked into thin sheets (0.3-0.5mm) to rupture cell walls and allow solvent penetration. The process is streamlined, with less mechanical handling than sunflower seeds require.
Extraction Equipment Adaptations
Huatai's extraction systems are engineered to handle both materials, but with tailored configurations:
Sunflower seed extraction: Huatai has developed specialized drag-chain extractors optimized for the pre-pressed sunflower cake. These systems are designed for thorough solvent contact with the porous cake structure.
Soybean extraction: The focus is on handling high throughput and achieving low residual oil (≤1%) from flaked soybeans. Huatai's extractors feature adaptive designs for different material characteristics.
By-Product Utilization
The extracted meals serve different markets. Soybean meal is a high-protein ingredient (40-50% protein) widely used in animal feed and protein isolate production. Sunflower meal has lower protein content but is still valuable as feed, and the hulls can be used as biomass fuel.
